Shelters for the homeless are overcrowded and existing facilities do not meet the needs of users and care providers. Emergency Cabins can be part of the solution.

The Emergency Cabin is a modular system with which a temporary (emergency) shelter facility can be created quickly, effectively and cheaply in different types of buildings and spaces. The units can be used to create individual sleeping facilities in, for example, a hall, office building or on a vacant lot. The design is cost-effective, space-efficient and multifunctional. The units offer a dignified, comfortable and safe space for people in need of a temporary bed in various shelter situations and for diverse target groups. Such a temporary residence increases the chance of getting out of the homeless situation more quickly. The units are offered on a non-profit basis by our foundation.

What we know

The problem of homelessness

Official figures state there are 26,000 homeless people in the Netherlands, but the true number is much higher. Many, often called the “economically homeless,” have jobs but can’t find housing and are excluded from traditional shelters. This forces them to rely on temporary solutions like sleeping on friends’ couches or in their cars, highlighting a major gap in the current support system.

Pressure on facilities

Social care facilities are struggling to meet the high demand for shelter places, as the number of available private homes is limited. When extra beds are needed quickly, organizations resort to costly and less-than-ideal solutions. This often means adding extra beds to existing locations, creating complex booking systems, or using expensive hotel rooms for temporary housing.

Your own space

Traditional night shelters offer little stability, forcing people back onto the streets during the day and providing minimal privacy. To truly escape homelessness, people need a secure, private space. A permanent and lockable sleeping facility allows individuals to maintain a job, access healthcare, and get the support they need, helping them avoid a downward spiral.

New type of facilities

There’s an urgent need for a new kind of shelter, especially for the homeless who don’t fit into existing systems. Temporary spaces in unused buildings, like the many vacant offices in Amsterdam, could provide a solution. However, their layout often makes them unsuitable for shelter. The Emergency Cabin system is designed to solve this problem, turning these empty buildings into functional and safe temporary housing.
