About us

Entrepreneur Job Heimans (De Fundering) and architect Steven Steenbrugge (Studio Steenbrugge) first met around the drawing board ten years ago, when they collaborated on transforming the former Volkskrant building in Amsterdam into a hotel.

Their experience creating comfortable accommodation for travelers also made them increasingly aware of the shortage of dignified, accessible places to stay for people experiencing homelessness in cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Berlin. This led them to explore a different kind of solution: a compact, affordable cabin that could easily transform an underused space into safe and private sleeping quarters.

Privacy was a crucial principle in the design. The aim was to create a place where people temporarily in need of a bed could feel safe, secure, and respected. Thus, the Emergency Cabin was born.

Stefanie Nijenbandring de Boer later joined the team to further develop the concept, test prototypes, and prepare the Emergency Cabin for implementation and the wider market.
